Powers of name. Chad Powers. And it’s coming (back) to you on a screen.
According to a press release from the company, Hulu ordered the creation of Eli Manning’s character “Chad Powers” into its own comedy series. Manning produced and interviewed Powers for an episode of his documentary series “Else Places” after Manning’s curiosity about the college football walk-on process led him to try out at Penn State under a pseudonym and disguise. Did the conversion. With the help of a special effects artist and a Matthew McConaughey-like personality, Manning successfully tried to become the Nittany Lion. He almost made it, too, as Penn State assistants naturally took a liking to the two-time Super Bowl champion before head coach James Franklin, who was the only person aware of Manning’s true identity, scheduled a tryout. Powers was thrown out at the end.
This episode aired on ESPN in September 2022. It was produced by Peyton Manning’s media company Omaha Productions.
“Chad Powers’ love has surprised me in the most wonderful way,” Manning said in a statement. “I played in the NFL for 16 years, but now when I’m at a restaurant or walking through the airport, it’s fun to have fans yelling, ‘Hey Chad!’
The new series will be co-written and produced by actor Glen Powell, who played Jake “Hangman” Seresin in the box-office hit “Top Gun: Maverick,” and writer/producer Michael Waldron, best known for “Loki.” “Rick and Morty.” The two will serve as executive producers alongside Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz and Ben Brown of ESPN and Omaha Productions.
“I hope Glenn is working on his QB skills, I’ve seen him throw the football at Maverick…he’s got some work to do!!” manning said on xFormerly known as Twitter, on Thursday.
In the new Hulu series, bad behavior destroys hotshot QB Russ Holiday’s college career, forcing him to go undercover and impersonate charming Chad Powers on a struggling Southern football team.
“We are both die-hard college football fans,” Powell and Waldron said in the release. “When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew this was the path to a big, fun story about this world. We’re excited to be a part of this team, and can’t wait to introduce Chad to the game. Think fast, run fast.”
