Dial old modem because you’ve got Mail It’s 25! To celebrate, ET is opening up our vault and taking a look at interviews with the film’s stars, Tom Hanks And meg ryanDuring his press tour for the 1998 romantic comedy.

“It’s just a natural thing,” Hanks said of his chemistry with Ryan. “It’s like, why are we friends with the people we’re friends with?”

The actor, now 67, revealed the surprising reason why their on-screen dynamics were so powerful.

“I have to say, Meg and I aren’t real close friends,” he admitted. “We see each other every now and again. It’s like, we don’t go out for coffee. … But when we start, we pick up where we left off and it’s a spontaneous thing Which I don’t think any of us investigate too much because if we did, it would be a problem.”

He added, “We don’t plan. We just do it.”

This dynamic on-screen couple first came together in the 1990s Joe vs Volcano. Although the film itself was forgettable, the stars’ magnetism became an undeniable force. He re-teamed with Nora Ephron in 1993 sleepless in SeattleThe trio is creating magic once again with a New York City-set you’ve got Mail five years later.

you’ve got Mail Centers on business rivals Kathleen (Ryan) and Joe (Hanks) – the former, an independent bookstore owner, and the latter, running a chain of mega-bookstores – who inadvertently connect online and form an unexpected connection.

“A lot of it, really, is this weird examination of America’s franchising,” Hanks told ET at the time. “This concept of big chain stores coming into neighborhoods and changing the complexion of the neighborhood, both for good and for bad.”

For Ryan, now 62, the project served as a starting point for his introduction to the digital world. And for today’s audience, it feels like a time capsule of those who lived through the rise of the Internet age.

“They sent me a computer at the beginning of all this and I never even turned it on,” he said, joking about his son – then 5 years old. jack quaid –She was already more technically savvy.

“It’s so much fun and I love email,” Ryan gushed. “I love it. And I was attracted to it right from the beginning of this movie.”

At the time both Ryan and Hanks agreed that the concept of chat rooms and instant messaging was not for them.

“I’ve been on email with one person and then someone has sent instant message, and so all four of us are in the same room, but we’re always trying to comment on things like the top five lines where we type. “It’s always been very confusing,” Hanks admitted.

“I couldn’t understand what was happening,” Ryan said of his chat room experience. “It was all happening so fast, everyone was writing badly.”

Warner Bros. Pictures

Another thing Hanks and Ryan agreed on wholeheartedly was their appreciation of each other’s work.

Ryan praised his co-star, saying, “He’s a very inventive actor and really, really, tries to find new things for every take.” “He really challenges himself. You know, Nora could have been done 10 takes ago, and he’d still be trying new and equally great things. I think he’s brilliant.”

For his part, Hanks was surprised by how Ryan pushed him in new ways as an actor.

“I’ll just go along for the ride,” he said. “But it’s like playing tennis with someone who is a better tennis player than you. Now, if you’re really into the game maybe you can beat them, but chances are, they’ll beat you. And so it becomes You better be. Then you’ll have a nice lunch later.”

At the film’s premiere, Hanks said he found Ryan “very mysterious”, while praising her as one of “the screen’s particularly great women”.

He said, “I’m not really sure what bothers him, and I think he’s happy with the fact that I don’t know what bothers him.” “I think she protects him.”

Hearing Ryan say this, she was equally fascinated by Hanks’ easy-going demeanor.

“He goes beyond being a generous person, he’s incredibly generous with his energy, with everyone, you know?” He said. “Not just the cast of the film, the entire team of the film, the people on the street. I think another big thing is that he takes attention well and he gives it to people who want to give it to him in a very wonderful way.” He gets it from. That’s something he’s done better than anybody.”

Warner Bros.

Ryan was in the news recently in 2015 Ithaca, a war drama in which he made his directorial debut and starred alongside Hanks, Sam Shepard and his son. Now she is making a comeback in the world of rom-com what happens later, Ryan co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film. David Duchovny,

“You get to be front and center. You get to be involved in someone else’s creative life in an intimate way,” she recently told ET about her experience behind the camera. “It’s cool. You learn how to talk to musicians, you learn how to search for light [director of photography] Whose life is about light and sound. As a director you become aware of life in a very intense way.”
