Emmy Awards ratings continue to decline.
According to preliminary data from Nielsen, 4.3 million viewers watched the Emmys on Fox on Monday night, the lowest viewership since records were set. In 2022, the Emmys received 5.9 million viewers, a previous low.
The ratings have brought the Emmys dangerously close to the Tony Awards, which have attracted far smaller audiences for decades. But in June, 4.3 million people attended the Tonys, more than its previous ceremony.
The final Emmy numbers, which will be released Wednesday, will likely increase somewhat from preliminary figures.
The Emmys had a lot against it. Last year the ceremony was delayed by four months due to the screenwriters’ and actors’ strike, the most significant postponement of the event in more than two decades.
Actually, the competition was tough on Monday night. The Emmys were facing off against a Monday Night Football playoff game and the Iowa caucuses.
Ratings for the football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not yet available, but first-round playoff games typically draw more than 25 million viewers. About 4.7 million people tuned in across the three major cable news networks between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. for the Iowa returns, according to preliminary Nielsen data.
The Emmys also faced competition from other awards shows. All of Monday night’s big winners — “Succession,” “The Bear” and “Beef” — were honored at last week’s Golden Globes and Sunday night’s Critics’ Choice Awards.
Yet the Emmys had trouble holding their own against reruns of a network television show. Monday’s repeat of “NCIS” at 8 p.m. on CBS — which had the advantage of a lead from another playoff football game — drew 4.9 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen data.
Most other major awards shows – despite lower viewership compared to a decade ago – have seen ratings improvements recently. Oscar ratings have increased for two consecutive years. So are the Grammys. Even the scandal-plagued Golden Globes saw a big increase in viewership last week.
The Emmys telecast, which aired on Fox and was hosted by Anthony Anderson, cannot be faulted. The ceremony received generally warm reviews, with critics praising the number of cast reunions – including those from “Cheers,” “Ally McBeal” and “Grey’s Anatomy” – held in honor of the awards’ 75th anniversary. Were.
The Emmys won’t last long. The next ceremony will take place in September and will air on ABC.
