Jeremy Allen White has confirmed that he has gained a whopping 40 pounds of muscle mass for his upcoming film, The Iron Clawand says he also gained a certain “confidence” during filming.
Speaking with ET’s Cassie Dilaura on Wednesday’s premiere of The Iron ClawThe 32-year-old White explained the phenomenal transformation he underwent to become a member of the famous Von Erich wrestling family.
“I ate a lot, quite a huge amount,” the actor said. “Just eating as much as I could and just trying to lift weights, no cardio.”
White said it was difficult for him to go without cardio workouts like running and jumping rope because he loves to run and had difficulty performing those workouts while lifting “heavy things.”
The other thing he had to get over was the hair styling and costuming for the film, which immediately transported the actors back to 1970s and 1980s Texas with big bowl wigs, cut-off jean shorts and sleeveless T-shirts. It was a look that White said took a while to get used to.
“I wasn’t confident right away, but I think we all look so different with the wardrobe and the hair and I think finding that comfort in something that seemed so far within us was, I don’t know, it a true gift.” White said he found his confidence while shooting.
The Shameless alum plays Kerry Von Erich while the wrestler’s brothers – Kevin, Mike and David Von Erich – are played by Zac EfronStanley Simons and Harris Dickinsonrespectively.
Since the film revolves around the American wrestling family, many of the scenes feature shots of White and his co-stars in their wrestling shorts and nothing else – another facet of the film that he had to learn to get used to.
“I wasn’t confident,” White said, laughing. ‘I have gained self-confidence, I think. Running around in your underwear for seven days, you get used to it.’
White also joked that while Dickinson took home his own wrestling shorts at the end of filming, he grabbed Efron’s shorts as a memento of their time on set.
The Iron Claw premieres in theaters on December 22.
