Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that artificial intelligence is like climate change because it will spread across the world, and people around the world share the responsibility of building guardrails.
At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO summit in San Francisco on Thursday, Bloomberg’s Emily Chang asked Pichai how to achieve global consensus on “smart AI regulation.”
Pichai said that AI “will spread” and “AI advancements will reach all countries and so it’s inherently that kind of technology – I don’t think there’s any one-sided security.”
Should AI go wrong in one country, it could affect other countries, making it difficult to regulate locally, he said.
“In some ways, it’s like changing the climate and the planet,” Pichai said. “We all share a planet. I think that’s true for AI.” That’s why, he added, “you have to start building the framework at a global level.”
Pichai said it was a shared responsibility of countries to build a global framework – something he has been warned about in recent months. He said he saw some signs of progress in the discussions, which also included the G7 summit in Japan earlier this year. The agreement was also reached yesterday between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who vowed to start conversations on the topic of AI.
